BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Worldwide and US premium entertainment network, Starz Entertainment, have today announced a three way co-production partnership that will develop a new series of the hit BBC sci-fi drama Torchwood. BBC Worldwide will also distribute the series to broadcasters globally.

Thursdays episode of Torchwood was the highest rated of the series so far, it was seen by 6.2 million viewers. It won it's slot and was the 2nd most watched show of the day behind Eastenders.

Last nights episode of Torchwood was watched by 5.9 million viewers with a 26% share. It won it's slot, ITV came second with 4.15 million viewers and a 18% share.

An ordinary day becomes one of terror, as every single child in the world stops. A message is sent to all the governments of Earth: "We are coming." But, as a trap closes around Captain Jack, the sins of the past are returning and long-forgotten events from 1965 threaten to reveal an awful truth.

Torchwood finally learns the truth about the events of 1965, as the adventure continues. But Britain is in danger of becoming a rogue state, and everything now pivots around John Frobisher, as the Ambassador of the 456 destroys its old allegiances and reveals its true intent.
Torchwood is defenceless and Gwen Cooper stands alone, as the final sanction begins, in the last part of the new Torchwood adventure.
As violence erupts and the world descends into anarchy, an ordinary housing estate becomes a battleground, where the future of the human race will be decided.

There will be a preview of the first episode Friday, 12 June in London. This will be followed by a question and answer session with the cast and crew. Children of Earth should start airing soon after that date.

In one epic story told over five nights the new series, to be broadcast for the first time on BBC One later this year, promises to be Torchwood's greatest adrenalin-fuelled, high octane adventure yet.
Torchwood: Children of Earth re-joins Captain Jack (John Barrowman), Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd) who are still coming to terms with the death of two of their closest friends. Despite their pain, they have a job to do.
This time they are faced with their fiercest threat to date - one which throws the future of Torchwood and the entire human race spiralling into danger. They battle against the odds but do they stand a chance of saving mankind?
A special preview will be shown at the New York ComicCon 2009. It will also be available to view on the official Torchwood site straight after.

Torchwood is based in Cardiff along a rift in time and space. Torchwoods job is to keep an eye on the rift and protect the people of Earth from alien threats. There have been four different branches of Torchwood, the Cardiff based branch is known as Torchwood Three.
Captain Jack harkness (John Barrowman), Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd) make up the current Torchwood team.
Torchwood was created by Russel T Davis as a spin-off from Doctor Who. The first episode aired on the 22 October 2006 on BBC Three.
